Fly Fishing 101

If you’ve ever thought to yourself, “I should try fly fishing” or “fly fishing looks fun” or “I could be fishing while enjoying this campsite along the river/lake/ocean” this workshop is for you!

Join Sara Horne & Amber Seitz for an introduction to the basics of Fly Fishing. We will go over what types of fish you’ll find here in the PNW along with basic fish anatomy and handling. We’ll discuss where you can fish, and how to use WA & OR Fishing Guides along with what license(s) you need depending on your interest. We’ll talk gear and setup, tips and tricks, and what you need to get started. Touch on entomology and fly selection. Casting basics. You name it, we got ya covered. With over 20 years of fly fishing experience combined, along with multiple seasons of guiding we really do got ya covered.

Depending on interest we’ll considering offering a follow-up Fly Fishing 201 so if you’ve been fly fishing for a while and feel like you’re ready to dig in deeper shoot us an email: amber@missing-corner.com and let us know what you’d like to learn next!

Facilitated by Sara Horne of theDeschutes River Valley & Amber Seitz of Underwood.

Meet your Instructors Sara Horne and Amber Seitz bring together a shared love of rivers, storytelling, and stewardship in this Fly Fishing 101 course.

Sara is an avid angler and professional fly fishing guide whose home waters are Oregon’s Deschutes River. She specializes in two-handed casting for anadromous fish and also guides on the Kanektok River in western Alaska. With a passion for steelhead, distance casting, and saltwater pursuits, Sara brings technical skill, competitive casting experience, and a deep respect for the traditions and ethics of the sport.

Amber’s love of fishing began on the cold, spring-fed trout streams of northeast Iowa, where she grew up chasing rainbows and browns before finding her way to the Columbia River Gorge, where rivers became both classroom and compass. With a background in global resource systems, sustainable agriculture, and environmental education, she has worked as a fly fishing, raft, and kayak guide across the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. Amber is especially passionate about making outdoor skills accessible and helping people understand the connection between healthy rivers, strong communities, and future generations.

Together, Sara and Amber combine hands-on technical instruction with an educator’s heart. Whether you’re picking up a fly rod for the first time or looking to better understand the waters you fish, they’re excited to help you build confidence, skills, and a deeper relationship with the river.
